Shoppers are being misled. Write to your MP today to protect British farmers by demanding tougher regulations on supermarkets.
Supermarkets use the trusted reputation of British family farmers: from Union Jacks displayed in the fruit and veg aisle, to quaint farm imagery on labels and billboards. Too often, it isn’t sourced from the small, local farms that shoppers are encouraged to imagine – but from overseas, or from industrial farms that are more like factories.
Riverford’s #FarmersAgainstFarmwashing campaign revealed that 74% of shoppers want supermarkets to be transparent about produce and meat that is not British and sourced from abroad.
You can write to your MP today to demand that the new government takes action to ensure fairer, more honest behaviour from supermarkets.
Stronger regulations must be established that guarantee a fair and stable income for our farmers.
The public care deeply about where their food comes from. Increasingly, shoppers want to support local, sustainable farms, where animals are treated well, staff are paid properly, and the planet is protected.
Traditional farming is disappearing as our current farming system becomes ever more concentrated as it attempts to meet the ever-growing demands of a food system which relies on mass quantities of cheap food. This is putting British farms at risk – 61% fear closure in the next 18 months.
