What's green and alarmingly salty?

Bought pesto. A survey by the campaign group CASH found shockingly high salt  levels in some brands of pesto sauce, and is urging Public Health England to call the food industry to account, as the deadline looms for Government salt-reduction targets.

Pesto has become one of the most popular ready-made sauces for pasta and other dishes. The latest survey by Sustain member CASH has found that some brands are much saltier than others, and that some are actually saltier now than when last tested in 2009.

The worst offender was Sacla, the current bestselling pesto brand, with their Italia Organic Vegetarian Pesto No.5 Basil and Italia Pesto No.1 Classic Basil. Both contained 3.3g of salt per 100g, 2.5 times more salt per 100g than salted peanuts. One serving of these products contained more salt than a McDonald's hamburger. Read more here.
