Alcohol-related deaths in Scotland

New official statistics show that alcohol-related deaths in Scotland are still almost double what they were in the early 1990s.

The number of alcohol-related deaths was relatively stable in the 1980s at about 600 per year but rose to a high of 1,546 in 2006. In 2014 there were 1,152 alcohol-related deaths. The Scottish Government said that Scots continued to drink almost a fifth more than people in England and Wales and that they were committed to tackling the alcohol problem, in particular championing the introduction of Minimum Unit Pricing.
