100 cities sign Urban Food Policy Pact
With cities now being home to more than half of the world's population, 100 cities have signed up to an 'Urban Food Policy Pact', committing to develop sustainable food systems and promote healthy diets for their citizens.
The pact was signed by 100 senior city representatives in Milan on October 15 and presented to the UN on October 16, World Food Day.
The Pact commits cities to develop sustainable food systems that are "inclusive, resilient, safe and diverse, that provide healthy and affordable food to all people in a human rights-based framework, that minimise waste and conserve biodiversity while adapting to and mitigating impacts of climate
change." This will be achieved through coherent practical and policy work addressing, for example, food supply and distribution, social protection, nutrition, equity, food production, education, food safety and waste reduction.
