Why Britain needs more pasture-fed livestock

A new Briefing Paper makes the case for more extensive, low-input, grass-based farming and sets out the policy changes needed to achieve it.

Sustain member the Pasture-fed Livestock Association champions the benefits of grass-based farming and meat production. Since its inception in 2009, when a small group of British farmers decided to join together to extol the wide-ranging benefits of producing meat from animals fed exclusively on pasture, it has become a thriving association.

It has also developed a 'Pasture for Life' standard and certification mark. The PFLA argues that its methods allow farmers to protect and build their soils, maximise the value derived from their grassland and practice low external input farming.

The Association has now produced a Briefing Paper that describes its activities and sets out the principal policy changes that would help more farmers and consumers to support this form of agriculture.
