National Food Crime Unit explains itself

A new Guide is intended to encourage more food chain workers to expose fraud or other illegal activity.

The National Food Crime Unit (NFCU) is a branch of the Food Standards Agency that aims to detect and prevent food crime, such as the criminal activity that introduced large quantities of horsemeat into the food chain in 2013.

It was set up in 2014, and is largely dependent on 'intelligence' -- inside information from people working in the food system who witness or suspect illegal activity.

But persuading people to share this information has proved a sensitive activity. The NFCU has therefore published a Guide to explain its role and help it build a 'meaningful two-way dialogue' with the food, drink and feed industry.

Find the Guide here, and read more here about Sustain's campaigning work for a greener, fairer food system.
