New Defra funding to champion local food

Communities and regions are invited to apply to a fund which aims to build a 'network of new foodie trails'

One of Liz Truss's last acts as Defra secretary was to announce a grant of £150,000, available to groups wishing to nurture and showcase British regional food production. Grants of up to £25,000 are available to partnerships, which could include community groups, trade bodies and national parks.

Tourism is an important factor -- according to VisitBritain, food is a major factor in  choice of destination for a third of visitors to the UK. However, it is hoped the initiative will also create jobs and boost regional food businesses.

The grants have been set up by the government's Great British Food Unit, as part of the wider, five-year Great British Food Campaign, which was launched earlier in the year. A partnership in Yorkshire was the first to apply for funding.
