Scotland to cut food waste by a third by 2025

Scotland becomes the first country in Europe to commit to a food waste reduction target.

The Scottish government has pledged to cut food waste in Scotland by a third by 2025, becoming the first country in the EU to make such a commitment. The move could help save businesses and households at least £500 million. It will also help meet the ambitious UN Sustainable Development Goal of halving global food waste by 2030.

The target for food waste reduction is an important part of Scotland's newly launched Circular Economy Strategy. This aims to reduce resource use across the economy by eliminating waste and prolonging product life. Scottish Environment Secretary Richard Lochead commented: 'A more circular economy, where we make things last, is an economic, environmental and moral necessity – and it just makes good sense.'
