Farmers urged to cut antibiotic use

The UK Review on Antimicrobial Resistance, commissioned by the UK Prime Minister, has released a report on antimicrobial use in agriculture and the environment.

The report noted that worldwide, far more antibiotics are used in animals than in humans and urged stricter controls on their use. They also raised concern about antibiotic production, in which active ingredients can be discharged into the environment. This could increase the risk of drug-resistant bacteria developing.
