Bakers for Bakers is orchestrating an international bake sale from 19 to 24 August 2024, inviting bakeries and their customers to help Bake For Ukraine fund two more mobile, wood-fired bakeries.

Already signed up are around 100 bakeries across America, the UK, Germany, and Canada, making palyanytsya (паляниця) and other Ukrainian specialties.

Background

The organisers say: ‘Bakers for Bakers formed in response to a need. Recognizing the power of collaboration, strength in numbers, and the immeasurable value of community, bakers have come together to buttress the work of Bake for Ukraine. Since the start of the war, Bake for Ukraine has supported local bakeries and farmers, raising money for salaries so local bakeries can provide free bread to people driven from their homes and livelihoods. Undeterred by rolling blackouts, they identified wood-fired mobile bakery units built by the Swiss army decades ago, to effectively continue their work. Thanks to the fundraising efforts led by Felicity Spector, Bake for Ukraine secured and refurbished one mobile bakery, which is currently in Mykolaiv where local volunteers are being trained by their team to bake bread for communities in Kherson region.’
