News: Voluntary action for the food industry

A new Supporting Healthy Choices Voluntary Framework has been launched, which sets out specific voluntary action for the food industry, including retailers, manufacturers, caterers and the public sector to support healthier diets in Scotland. Subway, AG Barr, Compass and Aramark are some of the first companies to sign up. Produced in partnership with the Food Standards Agency in Scotland, Supporting Healthy Choices sets out 17 commitments for action across four priority areas: Putting children’s health first in food-related decisions; Rebalancing promotional choices to encourage healthier choices; Improving education and information available to customers; and Reformulating recipes to reduce levels of salt, sugar and fat.

Blog: MPs champion our calls to invest in local food infrastructure

Last week, a well-attended Westminster Hall debate full of rich discussion from across political parties and front benches, agreed the motion to support local food infrastructure. Hosted by Peter Aldous, MP for Waveney, there was a strong turnout from across the political parties and across the UK, all of whom strongly showed their interest in supporting better and fairer to routes to market for UK farmers. Sustain and our alliance will seek to build on this momentum to secure greater support for local food systems across Parliament.

This is a new report from Compassion in World Farming, which aims to partially fill the gap left while the EU Commission delays on publishing its long-awaited Communication on sustainable food. This report is CIWF’s take on what the Commission’s Communication should be saying. The report is based on publications by bodies such as FAO and UNEP and on the findings of a wide range of scientific research. It primarily focuses on the role of livestock in the food system.
