Sustain is reaching out to young people, students and career movers to inspire and inform them about careers in the sustainable food movement.

As part of our Roots to Work programme, and following a successful careers webinar in spring 2024, Sustain has developed a programme to engage with students and graduates on careers in sustainable food and farming. Through talks and workshops at universities, colleges and youth-facing organisations, new entrants to the job market - as well as career movers - can explore the breadth of the sector ranging from education to policy.

More people than ever are searching for green jobs across all sectors, however the food sector is often overlooked or there is a presumption that jobs are typically in food production. Through our careers work, we shine a light on parts of the sector that the wider workforce might be less familiar with.

  • If you're passionate about stemming the flow of unhealthy food, what about a job in food policy or campaigning?
  • Want to diversify your teaching skills? How about combining that with a love for the outdoors in community garden education?
  • Did you know that with top tech skills you could have a behind-the-scenes role in supply chain logistics?

With jobs available in the public, private and third sector, there really is something for everyone. Our careers sessions provide details on the roles, organisations and routes into the sector. They are free and can be delivered in-person or online.

If your organisation or university is running sustainable career events or panel discussions then input from Sustain and Roots to Work is a great way to uncover a part of the sustainable jobs market that may be less familiar to students and young people.

Through this working we specifically aim to reach more Black people and people of colour, as these groups are underrepresented in the sector, and we want to explore challenges they might face, as well as demystify the roles within the sector.

If you work with young people, students or in a careers service get in touch to find out more.

Roots to Work: Roots to Work is a platform for people to advertise and find jobs in the field of good food. We noticed there wasn’t a unique gathering place for good food opportunities to all sit together and felt it was time to make it happen in the UK.
