Plastic bag law comes into force on 5th October 2015

A new law requiring large shops in England to charge 5p for all single-use plastic carrier bags has been introduced by the government.

The government said that the number of single-use plastic bags given out in England had risen every year for the last 5 years. In 2014 over 7.6 billion plastic carrier bags were given to customers by major supermarkets in England. By introducing this law the government expect to see an 80% reduction in the number of plastic bags taken from supermarkets.
