Closer to an Honest Crust Act in Ireland?

Tying in with the Real Bread Campaign's call for an Honest Crust Act, The Food Safety Authority of Ireland has issued new guidance on the use of words often seen in loaf marketing.

Terms covered by the new guidance include artisan, traditional and farmhouse.

  • The good news is that it clarifies how 'artisan' should be used.
  • The bad news is that 'farmhouse bread' effectively remains meaningless.
  • Worse still, at well over 30 years old, the Chorleywood 'Bread' Process (unleashed in 1961) could now be considered 'traditional'...

To help allow shoppers to make fully-informed choices about the food they buy and feed to their families, the Real Bread Campaign calls upon all governments to introduce adequately policed legislation requiring fully honest and transparent loaf labelling and marketing.
