'Climate-smart' farming to harness ICT

The European Commission looks to information technology to help reduce agriculture's GHG emissions

Farmers will be welcomed (or hauled) into the digital age, if work by the EU exective bears fruit, and technologies are developed to cut farming emissions. Under the Rural Development Budget, €64 million in research funds will be dedicated to precision farming and the application of digital technologies to agriculture. In a special report from Euractiv, EU Commissioner for Agriculture Paul Hogan describes farming as the 'last frontier', since products and Apps have been developed for every economic sector except agriculture. He says digital solutions have the potential to significantly improve resource efficiency, animal health, carbon footprint, and farmers' position in the supply chain.
