Friends of the Earth mounts legal challenge over pesticides

Sustain member Friends of the Earth has filed a High Court legal challenge to the government's decision to allow farmers to use pesticides restricted by the EU because of bees.

The neonicotinoid pesticides were restricted in Europe in 2013 after scientists warned that they harmed bees. The government is using a derogation to grant emergency 120 day use to some farmers after the NFU said crops were being lost to an infestation of cabbage stem flea beetles.  Friends of the Earth said “We believe that allowing farmers to use these ‘banned’ pesticides is unnecessary, harmful and unlawful."
