New research carried out by the Overseas Development Institute has compared retail prices in emerging economies (Brazil, China, Korea and Mexico) as well as the UK and the USA. They found that people in newly-rich countries face price hikes of up to 91% in fruit and vegetables compared with a fall in processed foods like cakes and biscuits. The ODI argues this is fuelling obesity epidemics in these countries. These patterns follow a trend set by the USA and the UK where researchers found that ice cream prices have fallen by 50% since 1980 while fruit and vegetable prices have increased by 199%.
